Print jobs restarting when paper out for too long

We have two printers pooled together that print 3x5 cards.  Some of these jobs can be hundreds, or even thousands, of pages long.  These printers are HP 4050s, and they can only hold so many cards at a time, which isn't much.  If the users printing these jobs don't pay attention and let them sit too long waiting to be reloaded, the job seems to error out and it starts over again from the beginning.  Our software that prints these cards only allows the full set to be printed...we can't choose a range to print.

This started happening recently after upgrading our printer server from 2003 to 2012 R2, so I imagine it is Windows causing this behavior.  Is there something that can be changed somewhere so that the jobs don't restart themselves after sitting idle for too long?

Thanks!
