Epson XP-400 - Driver/Software won't install

Hi all. I have a customer who bought an ASUS Win 7 Home Prem 64bit LT. Then a bit later she went out and bought this Epson XP-400 Wireless "Small in One" printer. She's asked me to try to install this on the LT. Prior to that the LT was plagued with 6 extra toolbars (marketing - ugh) and a bunch of messy browser issues that made life miserable. We straightened all that out with a good scrub, clean, uninstall, defrag. She uses Norton 360. I disabled the Norton Firewall and Real-Time Prot module. Checked the Windows firewall which was duly turned off by Norton.

To get the printer to install, these are the steps I followed:

Used the included software CD. Ran Setup.exe using right-click/run as Administrator. The installer runs through up to the point just past printer discovery. As you can see by my screenshot, it does find the printer. Then moments later, the error occurs, "Some files necessary for setup were not installed. Run setup again from the software disk". Hit Finish because "Back" is greyed out. Look at the installed programs and we find 4 pieces of Epson software have made it in. Leave those there for now.

Thinking that the Epson installer is correct, I re-ran the installer from the CD. Again, we go through the same path up to the error, which occurs again. Hit Finish. Scratch head. I noticed that 4 pieces of Epson software have made it in, one of them is entitled, "Epson Event Viewer". Let's look at that and see if it says anything - it's devoid of entry. Next I uninstall the 4 pieces of Epson software which are some utilities they give you to manage the printer, including Epson event viewer, Epson DL manager Epson Scan and such.

Now with those uninstalled and rebooting, I once again used the software disk. Once again at the same point, the same error. Finish. Uninstall the 4 progs and reboot. This time I went to the Epson site and DL'd the Win 7 32/64bit combo pack for a fresh start. Launched the combo-pack installer. This runs through and again, just like before, at exactly the same spot, the same error occurs.

Now, I'm really mad! Let's look at the LT (barely a year old) and see. Run SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt. Finds absolutely nothing wrong.

Look at the message, "Some files necessary..." Well, what files? Windows files? Driver files? Utility files? We're not told thus we don't know. Very mystifying and obscure to say the least. Got Epson on the phone and we re-installed using the combo-pack. The rep sent me to the printer to check the wirless setup. I informed him that it appeared to me as though the printer was joined to the network as evidenced by the green light Wi-Fi indicator on the front of the printer. So I convinced him that this really wasn't a network issue. After some troubleshooting, the rep blamed the LT. He was pretty quick to do so once he found the combo-pack wasn't working either.

Let me ask my good friends here. What would you folks try next to get this printer installed?
