Need (small-ish) laser printers / all-in-ones for retail use... recommendations?

We have been using Brother laser printers exclusively for quite a few years. About a year ago they discontinued the line of printers that we had such great success with (MFC-8480DN and HL-5370DW), and their current-gen replacements have been nothing but trouble for us. Not nearly as reliable as the older line. We've had almost 10 printers (MFC-8710DW, HL-5450DN, HL-5470DW) die on us under 75k pages in the past 6 months. Due to this, I've lost faith in Brother printers, at least until their next generation is released.

Everybody seems to recommend HP, but their printers are a bit more pricey, and their toner is quite a bit more. I can deal with the extra $100-200 for the printer, but $150 for a 6,900 page yield toner hurts. There are plenty of compatible offerings, but I've read that HP printers, especially the Pro models, don't play nice with any non-OEM toner. Does anyone have experience using compatibles with newer LaserJet Pro printers?
