Not a question...had to share a solution...
I needed to have a few "printers" set up that all are, in reality, pointing back to a single printer (but to different trays). The desired effect is that if you print to Printer A, you get paper from Tray 1...printer B, Tray 2...etc.
I've been banging my head against the wall for months trying to get this to work, but with only on-again, off-again success. There's no documentation to be found anywhere that addresses this, but it does seem that a lot of people have needed to make this work too.
I was just about to give up on it. It was a big deal because I convinced my boss to get another tray for this printer as a solution for a tight-space location, and I was going to look really foolish if my solution was a waste of money. Out of the blue, our vendor's printer support tech guy came by today for something completely unrelated today. I told him about the issue, so he asked to see it up close.
Well whaddya know, he spotted the issue right away!
It turns out that there are TWO places to make printer tray selections, and they HAVE to be identical (or the printer uses the default tray). I had noticed both of these places previously, but they looked identical. Consequently, I thought they were just two separate links back to the same place to set the data. Very misleading.
(Both locations are in the printer's Properties.)
The first location is pretty obvious: General>Printing Preferences>Paper/Finishing.
The second location...not so much: Advanced>Printing Defaults>Paper/Finishing.
Set your tray choice and click Apply. Always double check to make sure the setting is identical in both locations.
That's it. It's worked fine ever since.
One other note...consider installing the driver on the remote (client) computer.
