Tabletop MFP Recommendations?

Despite my protestations as we were setting up our office 3 years ago that our size and needs did not require that we sign an expensive multi-year lease agreement on a large MFP, the owner overruled me and we signed up with Royal Digital Imaging.

I wanted a much simpler, and hopefully more reliable, tabletop MFP that had basic features like letter/legal b/w laser printing, letter/legal color and b/w scan to email/USB as JPG/PDF, fax, and web administration interface. We don't need collating, stapling, 3000 sheet capacities, etc.

We have had large MFPs in here over the last three years from Konika Minolta, Panasonic, and now Toshiba. These things develop some kind of problem that requires Royal's techs to come out an average of every 3-4 weeks. Usually some part has to be replaced, and we are down for several hours to a day or so. I've never had any luck with the larger MFPs. Ridiculous. Meanwhile, I have a 6 year old Dell 5310n monochrome laser printer that has spit out over 280,000 sheets of paper in its life and never jammed or broken down.

We are not a high volume office. We average about 400 sheets a day to our MFP. I want to get out of our lease agreement and just get a quality tabletop MFP with the features described above. We have some small Brother laser HL-2270DW printers in managers' office that seem to work well and don't suffer issues, but I have no experience with their MFP products.

Any suggestions of something in the $700-$1200 range that we can buy outright, has a reputation for quality, and has reasonable consumables costs?
